Biography  - Sharon Templeman

I was born in Cheshire and first picked up a racket when I was five years old. It was when I was in Canada just playing against the wall and found I was good at it.

Since then I’ve played tennis on and off whilst growing up.  I started to have regularly coaching when I was 16, which is late for a tennis player to become a good player.  But I really enjoyed it and the challenge and would practice hard, playing five to six times a week and in doing so improved very much.

I went into the development squad when I was 17 and got selected to play for the Great Britain team by the time I was 22. I have stayed in the Deaf Tennis Team ever since.

I have played in two Deaflympics each time winning a bronze medal. I have also won the Dresse and Maere cup with the Ladies team (this is equivalent to the Davis Cup Tennis where have two single matches and one Doubles match) and have also won a silver medal in the European Championships.

Tennis has also enabled me to realise my passion for travel and have played tennis in Austria, Italy, Spain, Holland, France, Switzerland, and Australia.  I am now in training for the Deaf European Champs in 2008 in Romania and the next Deaflympics in 2009 in Taiwan.

I attended Stafforshire University and graduated in 2000 with a Sport and Leisure Degree.  Since then I coached Tennis in the USA and went on a Camp America Private Camp where I coached tennis for 4 months which was great fun.  After that I went on to travel the states which was amazing.

On returning to the UK I have continued to work as a tennis coach. I coached in Cheshire and then in North Wales Tennis Centre where I stayed for 4 years and achieved my DCA. I am a licensed coach and maintain my CRB checks so I can work with children. I also hold a first aid certificate and go on regular courses to update my LTA license.

Currently I am working in Holbury, Southampton where I am Head Tennis Coach of Waterside Tennis Club.  I am also working on my CCA qualification and I hope to achieve the qualification next year.

At Waterside I am striving to gain new members and make the club a thriving success.  The Waterside Tennis Club and I, are in the mists of trying to achieve funding to get the existing six tennis courts resurfaced and additionally install floodlighting.
